Scientists for the first time detected both the ripples in space and time and the light produced and emitted during the same cosmic event: the spectacular collision of two neutron stars.
The discovery would soon reveal secrets of the cosmos, including how gold was created.
Neutron stars, formed when massive stars explode in supernovas, are the smallest, densest stars known to exist. A teaspoon of a neutron star has a mass of about a billion tons.
The collision of neutron stars is known as a kilonova — an explosion similar to a supernova but on a smaller scale.
The crash generated a fierce burst of gamma rays and a gravitational wave, a faint ripple in the fabric of space and time first theorized by Albert Einstein a century ago.
“This is the one we’ve all been waiting for,” said David Reitze of CalTech Continue reading “Scientists for the first time witness collision of two neutron stars, also finds how gold is formed”
The UN Migration Agency on Friday said 100 migrants were still missing, two days after their ship sunk off the Libyan coast.
“Forty others who were aboard were rescued and seven others are known to have lost their lives,” the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) added in a tweet.

“Survivors said 130 people had been on board when the boat left the Libyan coastal town of Sabratha,” Ayoub Qasim, the spokesman for the Libyan navy forces, said.
Mr. Qasim told journalists that the incident resulted from a malfunction Continue reading “100 migrants missing two days after boat sank off Libya”
The U.S. Navy has removed the two senior officers and the senior enlisted sailor on a U.S. warship that almost sank off the coast of Japan in June after it was struck by a Philippines container ship, the Navy said on Friday.
The Seventh Fleet said that Bryce Benson was relieved “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to lead”.
The fleet also said that Sean Babbitt and Master Chief Petty Officer Brice Baldwin “contributed to the lack of watch stander preparedness and readiness that was evident in the events leading up to the collision”.
Several other junior officers have also been relieved, with administrative action taken against other members of the ship’s watch teams.
Multiple investigations have yet to apportion blame for the accident that killed seven U.S. sailors aboard the guided missile destroyer the USS Fitzgerald.
